South African authorities in Cape Town have detained the Farley Marwot anti-whaling ship. In a report by Melanie Gosling on www.IOL.co.za, it is detailed that the Canadian-registered ship belonging to the activist Sea Shepherd Conservation Society was detained by the South African Maritime Safety Authority because it was "not in possessoin of an international ship security certificate or a ship security plan".
The crew of the Farley Mawat however claim that the South African government is responding to pressure from the Japanese government in light of the Farley Mawot's anti-whaling activities in the Antarctic.
In a recent incident, the Farley Mawot engaged a Japanese whaler in the Antarctic Whaling Sanctuary and slammed into their starboard side to relay their feelings on this matter.
